The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) will hold its twelfth conference in Accra, Ghana April 20 – 25, 2008.

This major UN conference takes place at a crucial moment: the world faces a serious global financial crisis;negotiations at the WTO are in a stalemate, and progress towards internationally-agreed development goals is woefully inadequate, especially in Africa, and other third world countries.

    The Road to Accra
More than 4000 people from around the world - government representatives; journalists; senior UN officials and civil society groups – are expected to gather in Accra, Ghana to review major contemporary international trade and development challenges.

Theme for UNCTAD XII is Addressing the Opportunities and Challenges of Globalization for Development. There are four sub-themes:

    1. Enhancing coherence at all levels for sustainable economic development and poverty reduction in global policymaking, including the contribution of regional approaches
    2. Key trade and development Links and the new realities in the geography of the world economy
    3. Enhancing the enabling environment at all levels to strengthen productive capacity, trade and investment: mobilizing resources and harnessing knowledge for development
    4. Strengthening UNCTAD : enhancing its development role, impact and institutional effectiveness
